It’s just so punishing, so thoroughly incompetent, so greatly misguided…so intent on your absolute destruction. But then you’re in the middle of Manos: The Hands of Fate – lost, adrift – and damn if this doesn’t feel like the worst. Narrow the standards to anything that’s seen a theatrical release, and you could still fill warehouses with unwatchable films, far worse than Gigli or Catwoman.

I’ve never much liked awarded titles such as “the worst movie ever made.” I’ve made the worst movie ever made, when I was in high school, with a camera rented out from the A/V department or maybe you did. After a while, you want to crawl up the wall – anything to escape its deadly pull. At first, the film is unintentionally hysterical. It might be the light-jazz soundtrack, or the out-of-focus visuals, or the shaking camera, but there’s a too-many-Quaaludes sensation to the film that’s hard to shake. Even with the witty riffs of Joel Hodgson and the ‘Bots, you get a queasy feeling watching Manos. My strongest memory of that first viewing was of women in diaphanous gowns and giant white underwear wrestling to get the attention of their pasty-faced cult leader, The Master (Tom Neyman).

The master and his women begin the search for the visitors. Meanwhile, Michael has awakened and runs with Margaret and Debbie in the wilderness. Master ends this, has a resisting woman tied to a pillar, and performs a sacrificial ritual with Torgo's hand, which escapes into the night. While Master Torgo is called to account for his desires, a fight ensues between the women. The master and his wives awaken and it is discussed what to do with the visitors.
While Margaret and Debbie are left behind in the house, Michael is beaten unconscious by Torgo. Torgo demands a wife for herself at the ritual place of the sleeping master. She leads Michael and Margaret to a ritual place where "the master" of Torgo sleeps on an altar and a group of women stands on pillars, seemingly unconscious. Debbie runs away and is found a short time later by her parents with a big dog. While Michael tries to get him to work, Margaret is molested by Torgo. Margaret wants to leave, but the car does not start. When a loud howl sounds, her dog runs away and is found dead a short time later. Nevertheless, the family stays overnight. There they are received by Torgo, a satyr who seems little pleased with the presence of strangers. On the way to vacation, Michael, his wife Margaret and their daughter Debbie pass by a secluded house. In 1993, the film by the American series Mystery Science Theater 3000 re-edited. In the Internet Movie Database, the film in the list of the 100 worst rated films out (as of April 2015) and has repeatedly been referred to as one of the worst or even the worst movie of all time.
